There are 3 basic Metabolic Types, or “Metabolic Profiles”, associated with diet
Protein Type, Carb Type, and Balanced Type. Each one is primarily characterized by one macronutrient- protein, carbohydrate s, or fat – which functions as the primary fuel for the body. This nutrient also helps to regulate other metabolic functions in different ways depending on its type.
The Protein Type primarily uses protein as its energy source . The majority of their calories comes from protein and vegetables, and they tend to eat very little carbohydrates and some healthy fats (as opposed to fried or processed fats). In fact, the Protein Type’s energy level is so closely tied to their intake of protein that when they don’t get enough of it, they will feel tired and sluggish; and if they eat too much protein, they will actually start to feel physically ill.
Protein Types need to eat a good deal of high-quality protein (at least 3 ounces per meal) for proper maintenance and repair and because their body uses protein efficiently (converting it into carbohydrates), protein types tend not to store excess protein as fat . The main reason people become overweight has more do with carbs than proteins, contrary what most people believe.
Carb Types get energy primarily from carbohydrates (those found in vegetables , fruits, and grains). Carb Types’ bodies don’t use fats and proteins efficiently like Protein Types, and they gain weight quickly because their bodies preferentially store carbs (in the form of fat) for later use. They also tend to feel tired when their carb intake is too low or stressed; but if they eat too many carbs, then they may experience energy fluctuations due to insulin spikes .
Finally, Balanced Types get energy equally from all three macronutrients – protein, carbohydrate s , and fat . Balanced types don’t experience blood sugar imbalances or health issues that are directly caused by eating too much of one macronutrient. However, Balanced Types still need to be careful about achieving an appropriate balance between each macronutrient.
Metabolism and Your Diet
While we all know that eating a good diet is supposed to be the best way to stay healthy, it’s also important for people to eat properly according to their metabolic type. This means eating the types of foods each person metabolizes best , which varies depending on what type they are. If you eat wrongly, your body will feel tired and stressed . Here’s how:
- if balanced types get too much protein or starch (over 1/2 cup or more per day), they may actually gain weight instead of losing it; while too much protein and fat might result in fatigue and hormonal imbalance;
- Protein Types who eat excessive carbs lose energy because these macronutrients convert into triglycerides in the liver ;
- Carb Types who don’t get enough protein and fat will lose energy and feel stressed out because their bodies cannot function properly without these nutrients.
So what does this mean for people’s health? It means that we should all eat the way we were meant to eat: by following metabolic types! Of course, it is sometimes hard to know which type you are (without taking a test), and every individual has some characteristics of both types, although one tends to be dominant.
The best thing everyone can do for themselves is to listen to their own “inner voice” or instinct when choosing foods so they will eat in a manner that allows them to feel good physically and emotionally. Protein Type – This type’s main energy source is a protein (and fat). People who are primarily protein types should eat foods like meat, chicken, fish, dairy products, nuts, legumes, seeds, and eggs. These types need about 3 ounces of high-quality animal protein in each meal to feel satisfied.
Carb Type – As I mentioned before, people who are carb types get their energy primarily from carbs. Not only do these types crave sugary foods like bread, sodas/carbonated drinks (including diet ones), noodles (like ramen or angel hair pasta ), dried fruit, chips/crisps, and other simple carbs, but they may also feel satisfied when their carb intake is too low or when their blood sugar levels are too high. For this reason, Carb Types must eat the correct types of carbs to maintain sustained energy levels.
Balanced Type – The balanced type can get energy from both proteins and carbs in approximately equal measure. These types should eat a normal balanced diet that contains a little bit of all foods.
How to Eat?
This depends on what you are eating. However, recent studies have shown that the idea of metabolic typing may very well be more important than previously thought.
People are usually classified into one of three body types: endomorphs, ectomorphs and mesomorphs. An endomorph is described as a naturally chubby person who has a pear-shaped build with large hips and thighs.
Ectomorphs are naturally lean people whose builds are characterized by long, thin muscles without much fat or muscle mass. Mesomorph is muscular people who have athletic builds due to higher levels of both muscle and fat.
However, researchers at Arizona State University say whole grains should not be part of your dinner if you’re an endomorph, nor should fats if you’re an ectomorph. If you are a mesomorph, on the other hand, eat all of what is served.
“You can determine whether someone is an endomorph, ectomorph or mesomorph by putting them in water,” said Dr Taylor Hays, lead researcher and professor of medicine at the university’s College of Osteopathic Medicine. “It’s called hydrostatic weighing.”
Hays and his colleagues had more than 400 participants come to their Phoenix clinic for this test. They each had their body fat percentage determined by being submerged in water while wearing minimal clothing.
Then they were given whole grains to eat for two weeks, carbs for another two weeks and fats for two-week periods The researchers then changed the types of food the participants ate and repeated the test to determine changes in body fat.
“What we found was incredible,” said Hays. “We saw on average about a 14 per cent decrease in belly fat during low-carb diets, 11 per cent during high-fat diets, 13 per cent during low-glycemic-index diets and seven per cent during high-fibre diets.”
So, if your weight is more than 30 pounds over your ideal weight or you have less than 20% of subcutaneous abdominal tissue (fat right under your skin), you are an endomorph. If you weigh within 10 pounds of what’s considered normal for your height but have greater than 40% body fat percentage, then you’re an ectomorph. Otherwise, you’re a mesomorph.
Endomorphs should eat low-carb, high-protein foods like meat, fish, poultry, eggs and cheese. Also, include green vegetables with every meal because they are full of fibre and nutrients but have less impact on insulin levels. Finally, take your time when you eat to help boost weight loss even more.
Ectomorphs should eat low glycemic index carbohydrates like pasta made from beans or soy flour rather than white flour. Also include lots of green vegetables along with whole grains like brown rice and oat bran bread. Avoid processed meats that are high in fat and sugars.
Mesomorphs can eat anything that’s not too fattening or sugary. Whole grains are fine, as are most vegetables and fruits.
