The Caffeine Content in Mountain Dew

Mountain Dew, a popular citrus-flavoured soft drink by PepsiCo, has been criticized for its caffeine content. In response to consumer demands, PepsiCo has provided the caffeine content in various sizes of all Mountain Dew products with custom caffeine calculators on its website. These calculators take the volume of individual serving size and multiply it by how many servings per container there are to provide a total caffeine value.

The typical ingredients in Mountain Dew include carbonated water, high fructose corn syrup (which is primarily glucose), concentrated orange juice and/or other citrus flavourings, citric acid, sodium benzoate and potassium sorbate as preservatives, natural flavours, caffeine and yellow 5 dye. A 20 oz bottle of Mountain Dew contains 54 g of sugar, 125 calories, and 109 mg of caffeine.

A Mountain Dew Kickstart Orange Citrus beverage provides 50 per cent of a person’s daily need for vitamin C with the addition of concentrated orange juice in each serving. Mountain Dew is available in 22 oz, 20 oz, 2 ltr, 12 oz aluminium cans and fountain drinks. All data was taken from the product websites on January 9th, 2013.

Caffeine in Mountain Dew

There is a wide range of caffeine content in mountain dew depending on how much liquid is in the beverage.  In general, there is 109 mg of caffeine per 20 oz bottle.  This is about 50 per cent more caffeine than an average cola drink.

The highest concentration of caffeine by far comes from the largest size; it has almost twice as much caffeine at 160mg. The smallest sizes (12 oz and fountain drinks) have the least amount of caffeine, even less than half that found in Pepsi or Diet Pepsi.

Mountain Dew also uses other ingredients to add flavour besides carbonated water and high fructose corn syrup; concentrated orange juice provides vitamin C while caffeine is a central ingredient.  Caffeine adds to the flavour of the beverage and helps give it its characteristic ‘bite.’  It can also lead to increased alertness, but how much caffeine contributes to how awake depends on how much caffeine an individual consumes.
